REYJAVIK : AN ICELANDIC TAKE ON ARTDECO ARCHITECTURE

If you look closely , in the intimist Icelandic movie of 2023 “Touch” you will get to see the Hallgrímskirkja church in the background of one of the first scenes. The Church as well as the National Theatre illustrate a very specific Icelandic take on the early 20th century architecture movements, fusing Art Deco with expressionism and a touch of Jugendstil.

Hallgrímskirkja. An ode to modernism and a most important symbol for Iceland's national identity. The church is named after the 17th-century clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson, author of Hymns of the Passion.

The theatre’s design, by state architect of Iceland Gudjon Samuelsson, is based on old Icelandic folktales about humans being invited into elf palaces inside giant rocks, entering a transcendental world of colour, lights, dance, and music.
